Oral sedation can greatly minimize stress and anxiety that may be associated with a dental procedure. In a relaxed state, you will be able to communicate with the dentist and staff during treatment. Even though it is safe and effective, you should be aware of some necessary precautions and considerations associated with taking oral sedation.
1. Sedation begins around 30 minutes after oral ingestion. After you have taken the medication, DO NOT drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours.
2. You MUST have an escort TO and FROM the dental appointment. This individual should remain with you after your dental appointment for several hours because of possible disorientation and potential injury from falling.
3. This medication should NOT be used if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have liver, kidney, or lung disease
- You are taking benzodiazepines
Tell the dentist if you are taking any other medications, as they could dangerously interact with the oral sedation.
4. DO NOT eat heavily before your appointment. Prior to your appointment, it is advisable to have a small amount of food (eg, juice or a piece of toast). Too much food will impair the effectiveness of the medication.
5. DO NOT consume alcohol on the day of your appointment.
6. Side Effects include (but are not limited to): amnesia, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and difficulty with coordination.
