Endodontics / Root Canals
Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry concerned with the study and the treatment of the dental pulp. It relates to the tooth pulp, tissues, nerves and arterioles within the tooth. These delicate structures can easily become diseased and inflamed, causing pain and discomfort.
Signs and symptoms of endodontic problems:
- toothaches
- inflammation of gums
- tenderness to touch and chewing
- increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods
- tooth discolouration
Endodontic Treatment
Endodontic treatment or root canal therapy is performed to preserve the natural tooth and its function. Root canal therapy usually begins with X-ray examinations to determine the condition and the treatment needed to restore the tooth. At Pemberton Dental, we have doctors who are specifically trained to perform such procedures. Expect this type of therapy to take between one to three visits to complete. Local anesthetics will be administered before the procedure begins to help reduce stress and anxieties about pain.
A root canal procedure involves the removal of the pulp of a tooth that has been affected by decay or infection. To perform this, an opening is made on top of the tooth to reach the pulp. Then, the pulp and the canal are thoroughly cleaned to destroy any residual bacteria and infection. Next, the resulting space is then filled with a rubber-like sealing material to help prevent the spread of infection and protects it from future re-infection. Lastly, a crown is carefully placed over the tooth to protect it from mechanical forces of chewing and eating.
What to expect after the procedure?
After a root canal treatment, it is common for patients to feel heightened sensitivity to their teeth for the first several days. After the treatment area has healed, then any pain or discomfort should diminish.
